Gelding

Superman (Jockey Club name Elbasan) is a Pennsylvania bred unraced Thoroughbred gelding. He was purchased and trained as a polo pony and had an incredible career, ending up as a top horse of the Twin Cities Polo Club. His owner noticed Superman was having trouble seeing out of one of his eyes, making it unsafe for him to continue with polo. Within a few weeks, Superman was totally blind in both eyes. He was diagnosed with Uveitis, or Moon Blindness, which is the most common cause of blindness in horses worldwide. 60% of horses affected are unable to return to previous levels of work. ERU is often characterized by repeated episodes of inflammation of the uveal tract of the eye (the middle layer).
